dissent

l

the "dissent jabot”, worn by Justice Ginsberg when issuing a ruling with which she does not agree, is not this one, but i thought this one more iconic, the better tribute to our Court.

Dissent is made of nine simple rounds, representing the traditional, if not presently applicable, makeup of the United States Supreme Court. there is no pattern but only simple stitches. anyone can make Dissent.

first shetland fleece! (on my own)

i washed 4.2 oz, which came out beautifully, yesterday morning.

dry, it came out as 3.2oz, of which i put 0.7 oz directly on the blending board around midnight, as i couldn't sleep, and made a loose rolag to spin up this morning.

i seemed to have made laceweight without trying for anything in particular (mine's the white on the right; the pink on the left is commercial alpaca laceweight)  so then i trec again, to make it more like fingering.

of course, who knows what it will turn out in the end, but i separated the single on the bobbin (it's down at the bottom end) with some fox colored commercial roving that i used for leader, spun up the rest and transferred it to the plying bobbin to set the twist overnight.
here's my ingenious plying system:

all this took about two hours this morning. next i want to try lightly carding the fleece before blending, to see how that spins up tomorrow, after i ply this.  i spun this, mostly, long draw, with some difficulty with tufty bits, so i want to see it i can smooth that out some.  i want to make  a soft fingering, but soft of what i'm really going for, whatever weight it comes out at this point.  trying to remember if i'm supposed to weight woolen while drying...need to find out before tomorrow

clunky

JO has developed this:

do you know what makes my clunky clunk?

first jo bobbin

DSCN0899

at last! it seemed like i  spun on this forever!  i’m told a full jo bobbin is 6 oz., but with the chip, let’s call it just under that.. i wound off the 25 or so wpi singles onto three storage bobbins and determined to ply two of them.DSCN3320

but then i discovered jo doesn’t like to reverse!

i managed about 18 yds. on jo before throwing in the towel-- which is too bad, because look how nicely balanced it is.

sDSCN3319

all  washed up it looks like this, 19 wpi, or just fingering weight.

DSCN3324

so, after much assistance from the ravellers, it was determined that plying might better be done on liz.

DSCN3322

and it was a breeze and i stuffed the bobbin

DSCN3321

but i was amazed to find that i’d used up almost all of each one!

DSCN3325

and when i wound it off, it only came to 178 yds.,

DSCN3333

and twisted Z quite badly.:(

DSCN3334

it’s not as soft, either, being over plied, i guess (i treadled 4 twist and 4 takeup, but perhaps i should have stuck with the 3/3 i did in jo; i thought i’d need to compensate for her smaller drive wheel…)  but we’ll see what happens after washing.  i weighed it on my highly accurate kitchen scale (!) and it came  to only about 3oz.

so that means that the whole bobbin was barely 5 ozs?  and that will give me around 300 yds. per bobbin, is that right?  actually seems pretty close to what i was getting on liz, alone, or so it seems to me.

more practice!

first try

i bought a paper bagful of raw wool (about 2 lbs) from  martha when i was in brigadoon at christmas and this is the result of my first try at prepping a handful.  not great, but good for a first try!  the theory works, anyway.

5 yd test skein

washed a handful last weekend, but still a bit sticky.

first wash

made two rolags, kinda….

kinda rolagrolag?

spun the first single:

1st single1st single

then the second single (definitely easier):

2nd single2nd single

and it made a five yd. test skein:

i made them on liz, and one of her bobbins (the first one) is definitely bad: the bearing inside causes it to stick and pulls out completely.  i wonder how i can fix it?
